Fashion Films: holy wow.

This was the first 'fashion film' I ever saw and I didn't even know things like this existed so it blew my mind a little. To see a short film where it was pretty much just visual feast trying to express an emotion or time or fantasy that the brand wants you to feel while wearing their products was a really cool mix of an extended ad and a short film. I think it appealed to me because whenever I try to make a film it lacks any sort of plot-line and just want to make a moving painting or pretty piece of video art that delves into creationism and blerh. and NOW THERE IS A WHOLE GENRE for just arty short films that revolve around fashion and now I have a dream career to aspire to.
There are bits I don't like about this video (i.e. the start with the girl in the car, why are they playing drums? they obviously are not musicians, and the music is annoying at times) but then there's other things like the awesome slo-mo and effects that make it so pretty.
Also there is this one which is probably a better example:
There are so many things right about this. Let me make a list.
  1. It's made my Nick Knight
  2. It's a tribute to Alexander McQueen (aka God)
  3. Muisc by Björk
  4. The mirror effect
  5. The distorted effect
  6. The clothes
  7. The lighting
  8. It makes me want to cry tears of joy and sadness at the same time
  9. It's like there are fabulous women-aliens of the deep emerging to take over the world and I want to be one of them.
  10. THE FLOWER DRESS. DID YOU SEE THE FLOWER DRESS.
Also there is a facebook page for the Fashion Film Network that posts links to fashion short films and advertising campaigns almost every day so get on that, it's thoroughly worthwhile having a look at them.

This has got me in such a video mood I might do another video post later.. we'll see.

Tame Impala's Dominic Simper's Mixtape (free music for you!)

This is my all time favourite mixtape without a doubt. An hour of sad/weird/optimistic/apocalyptic but relaxing music that is nice to listen to but makes you feel like death at the same time. Like you're watching the sun crash into the Earth and there's nothing you can do but it's amazing and and beautiful and you know it all ends but it's fine (wow over-dramatic description there Sarah...) This has been out for a while, in fact I first downloaded it around a year ago and I don't know if it fells the same to me now as it did then, it's a bit irrelevant to how I'm feeling these days but maybe you'll enjoy it anyway (wintery mixtape?). It was put together by the bassist of Tame Impala (a quality psychedelic band if I may say so) and he writes cute little notes under all his choices for the tracklist.
Click here for the tracklist which includes Aphex Twin, The Strokes, Foals, The Horrors, Wairpaint and David Bowie all beautifully put together with hints of hip hop next to long dreamy instrumentals from The Horrors (Who's new album is coming out very soon!)
The Modular record label website puts out heaps of these mixtapes made by their bands and they're pretty swell so check them out.

27/6/11- Advanced Style

Advanced Style has to be one of the most inspiring fashion blogs I have come across in a loooong time. I actually can't wait to be old and fabulous like these gorgeous ladies and I admire how much fun they have and how individual they are (note to self: take all of their advice-now!)
Take a look at the blog if you have some spare time because I know I spent hours on it.
best.
Now for some adorable 'ol couples...
Their co-ordination is truly admirable. Plus they look like they are having so much fun...

Videos #2

Bit of punk for your day:
We've got a bigger problem now- Dead Kennedys
Him talking at the start is the most adorable thing and the music is just so good!
and for something completely different
The sun always shines on t.v.- a-ha
Such a good pop song. I'm shameless.

Pictures #1

Cookies my sister made that melded into giant cookies which I then made myself very sick on.
This top is amazing (op shop find of course) its a cropped long sleeve top with a tie bit at the neck on the back and it's the coolest colour and texture. Feat. new nail polish on my stumpy post-exam fingernails.
My dearest mother brought these home today. Good choice mother. I look forward to slowly turning into a mermaid over the next few weeks.
Iron chef was on last night.

Dazed & Confused July 2011

Would have posted this yesterday but I think I'm becoming far too enthusiastic with my blogging already. So to start your morning enjoy some fantasy clothes/scenarios
mm silky rainbow minks and fishnet dress
Is that a dress made of scarves? because if so that is the best diy idea ever considering the amount of scarves around in op shops...
(me on the last day of school)

Some of my favourites from the editorial. It's perfect. The clothes, the photography, the styling the models/poses, the flowers and the COLOURS, oh the colours. I love how it looks like they have just pilled everything on but so co-ordinated at the same time (aka perfect styling) basically it's my idea of heaven and I would very much like to frolic around in those fields while draped in layers of flowy colourful designer clothes while still looking fierce and angelic. This makes me want wallpaper of photos of flowers. Also Dazed always does the best editorials- they look so natural and real and ~raw~ but still from some strange fantasy world. Seriously need to go to the library and borrow out some back issues (why do magazines have to be so expensive eerrgh)

Classical Art

Such a thing for classical art at the moment which is kind of strange considering we've been getting into installation and conceptual art at school (which I'm enjoying too) but I really admire strong technical skill probably because of my lack-of and because I think I understand now how hard it really is to be a good painter. Plus my little obsession with women in art and perception of beauty rah rah rah is all over classical paintings. The first few pictures are from a blog I found called Classical Art Blog and the others are from tumblr.
The Swing, 1767 Jean-Honoré Fragonard
Mäda Primavesi, 1912 Gustav Klimt
Portrait of Helene Klimt, 1898 Gustav Klimt
(How absolutely beautiful is this?!)
And  a few miscellaneous painting I found on tumblr...
Christina’s World, Andrew Wyeth
I can't remember exactly what this one is but it's about a golden apple that only the most beautiful goddess could have so three of them fought about it until Aphrodite bribed that guy who's name I can't remember to say she was the most beautiful in exchange for the most beautiful woman on earth but it caused a war and shit went down. Wow I sound really um cultured and sophisticated? non? (edit: The Goddess of Discord Choosing the Apple of Contention in the Garden of the Hesperides. 1806, J. M. W. Turner)
Vanity Frank Cadogan Cowper
Moonlit Seascape 1902 Thomas Moran
(love the light in this, so dramatic and ~tumultuous~)
Flowers in a Vase Jan Davidsz de Heem

HAPPY SATURDAY EVERYONE

Wynnum Up Late

I have been sort of involved (not very much, I just like to think I have been because I talk about it a lot) in Wynnum Up Late a sort of arts/craft/fashion community event that is happening every 3 months in Wynnum with a whole bunch of shops like The Collective Store, Beadoire, Moroccan shop, Artigano, Papertrenz, Dolls and Doilies, Mason and Daughter art gallery and even Vinnies stayed open and got a stash of retro treasures in from head office for the night. If you live in the bayside area (or anywhere in Brisbane really) definitely consider coming along next Wynnum Up Late (September sometime) and like the Facebook page for dorkily worded updates from me. Yay! p.s. stay tuned for a promotional video I filmed on the 16th.

25/6/11

Only had one exam on Thursday morning so then I came home and went op shopping in 'ol Wynnum town and got this amazing cardigan which makes me feel like a cross between a spanish bullfighter and grandma and this really high waisted pencil skirt. I have a bit of a thing with all things conservative at the moment- I think dressing really conservatively but having a really non-censervative attitude is so cool. It's like the old 'blending in while tearing down the establishment from the inside out' power thing. As well as having a soft spot for office fashions of the 80s/90s. (But I want to wear trashy shoes and wigs while being conservative?) Power to the common woman y'all. Also had the best night last night. Went to the Emporium in Valley for mexican with my new amigos for the last day of term and yeah life is swell.

Firstly I think the new new music/ old footage thing is so good in this- must try at some point
And I could not stop laughing at this. Don't ask how I found it but it has to be one of the best videos on the net. And he must have lungs of steel- zombieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Aya Takano

I came across Japanese artist Aya Takano's work a while ago on tumblr and fell in love with it- I think because of her characters, these girls that aren't perfect but they're just awkward and lanky and weird and big eyed, there's something loveable and relatable about them. She's part of the Superflat post-modern art movement which is quite interesting to have a little investigate on.  I can't really be bothered to write shit about it because ~a picture paints a thousand words~ so enjoy...

Pugly Pixel Tutorials

I recently discovered a cute little website called Pugly Pixel that has some really easy photoshop tutorials to make your own graphics and the like (see amateur banner for my skill level.) But anyway I had fun making my very own wallpaper fantasies come to life. Here's the video tutorial with some groovy hawiian-esque music to get you in the create mood.

Hours of enjoyment for the whole family.

QUICK STORY- I have have had so many blogs it's ridiculous, I had my first 'Piczo' site when I was about 11 or 12 and I always wanted to publish things on the web and the like but whenever I started a new blog with some amazing idea it would last a total of 2 days max. before I forgot about it and moved on with life. Hopefully this will be different because I'm not going to make as "niche" as past things I've tried to do and try and make it more personal and not try to be some faceless, nameless internet blogger because then I will do shit all. (unless you've noticed this little story is mostly me just figuring out how I'm going to approach this, don't mind me)
I'll start with a link to my tumblr if you want to see what I'm into visually-

p.s. would totally have white-charcoal as a blogger address but someone who hasn't posted anything since 2009 is hogging it ~eternal sadface~
